The first Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Lifetime Achievement Award has been awarded to Dr Rafia Ghubash, founder of the Women’s Museum, UAE, at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, for her work in raising the profile of Emirati women poets, especially of Ousha bint Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Suwaidi. She accepted the award from Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor and festival Director Isobel Abulhoul.

Al Habtoor congratulated her and said, “I am very pleased to present this honour to Dr Rafia Obaid Ghubash, she works tirelessly to raise the profile of women in our country. She has single-handedly opened the Women’s Museum — a spectacular museum that showcases women throughout our history including renowned Emirati poet Ousha bint Khalifa Al Suweidi. Dr Ghubash is a role model for all women, not just Emirati women.”

Abulhoul said: “Dr Rafia Ghubash should be congratulated for her hard work in bringing the work of poet and legend Ousha bint Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Suwaidi to the attention of the young of today, and reawakening interest in the beautiful work of Ousha, whom we are honouring as Festival Personality this year. We would like to thank Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor for his support in instituting this award, which further celebrates literary achievement in the UAE.”

Ghubash, who is Ousha Al Suwaidi’s official biographer, is a Full Professor of Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist and President of the Arab Network for Women in Science and Technology and holds both the UK and Arab Board Certificates in Psychiatry (BCO Psych. 1990, and ABCO Psych. 1997). She has also served as a member of WHO’s Scientific Committees, World Future Council in Germany, Advisory Council for the UNDP and the Board of Trustees of the Shaikh Khalifa Educational Awards in the UAE.

Her many honours and awards include the Rashid Awards for Distinguished Scientist (1988 and 1992), Al-Owais Research Award (1992, 1994 and 1995), Award of Distinction for Citizens from Umalmomenien Women Association (2002), and the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Award for Medical Sciences (2003/2004).

The Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Lifetime Achievement Award was established to recognise outstanding and long-lasting contributions to the world of literary endeavour and is awarded to an individual who has made significant contributions to literature in the UAE.
