The Emirates Down Syndrome Association (Edsa) has submitted its bid to host the World Down Syndrome Congress in 2021, Eid Thani Harib, chairman of the board of directors of EDSA, said on Thursday.
“The Congress is a global conference, where research and issues related to Down Syndrome are shared and discussed with the aim of improving the quality of lives of those affected,” Harib said.
The voting ceremony will be held on July 31 in London. The host country is selected based on several criteria, and its services available for people with Down Syndrome. The last Congress was held in India last year, and the next one will be in 2018 in Scotland.
Harib said Edsa is well poised to host the Congress because of its leading position in Middle East’s medical field, and its regional and global connections.
“There has been clear progress in the services, systems and laws supporting people with disabilities, and Dubai is in pursuit of becoming a global city that is friendly to people with disabilities,” Harib added.
Edsa was established 10 years ago under the supervision of Ministry of Community Development and the Ministry of Presidential Affairs.
