Gautam Bambawale, a senior Indian diplomat, currently serving as the country's envoy to Bhutan, has been appointed as high commissioner to Pakistan.
An Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1984-batch, Bambawale will replace T C A Raghavan, who is retiring at the end of this month. His appointment is part of a major reshuffle undertaken in the ministry.
Bombawale's posting comes at a time when Pakistan-India relations are undergoing a thaw. The recent visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Pakistan and the decision to resume a 'comprehensive composite dialogue' has brought back some optimism.
Bambawale is regarded as a China hand.
