Former British Prime Minister praised the UAE as an exemplary nation and its leaders for their strong, long-term strategic planning and open-minded policies.
"The West has much to learn in this regard," Tony Blair, said in a lecture titled "The Opportunities and Challenges of Globalisation," held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), on issues relating to international relations, Iran and European politics. The event was attended by diplomats and community members.
Calling for the strengthening of cooperation between nations, Blair noted that it would only serve to confront the dangers of extremism and the spread of terrorism. He said it is paramount to better understand the roots of extremism, and to enhance security measures in order to prevent any type of a so-called caliphate. In line with these recommendations, Blair pointed out that The Mirage, by Dr Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, director general of the ECSSR, is an important contribution to this debate, as it thoroughly traces the roots of such extremist ideologies.
To further illustrate his point, Blair discussed the role of Iran within the region and how extremist ideology is used to spread chaos and instability - and, noting that while the nuclear issue was separate, a unified stance must be taken by world leaders to put an end to Iran's nuclear ambition.
He also called for the implementation of more strong, long-term and strategic policies in the West. In order to reap the benefits of globalisation and confront both the challenges of today and the future, Blari said, "It is better to be together and think together, than to break apart."
