Countrywide rallies slam attack on Dawn TV van

Islamabad - Unidentified gunmen attacked a DawnNews Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) van in the Essa Nagri area of Karachi, injuring one staff member.

Journalists across the country on Saturday staged protest rallies and held meetings at press clubs in major cities against an attack on a DawnNews van in Karachi on Friday evening.
They condemned efforts to stifle Press freedom and urged the government to provide security to newsmen, TV cameramen and technicians during coverage of various events.
Unidentified gunmen attacked a DawnNews Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) van in the Essa Nagri area of Karachi, injuring one staff member.
Attackers riding motorcycles fired straight shots at the DSNG van near Essa Nagri, leaving technician Hassan Mateen severely injured.
Doctors said the Mateen was shot in the shoulder and his condition was stated to be stable on Saturday. He has recorded his statement to the hospital and said he could not see the faces of the attackers.
DawnNews Cameraman Umar Shah said the attackers fired on the DSNG from the left side while the vehicle was in motion.
Security forces were on high alert in Karachi, but the attackers managed to flee successfully after the incident.
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) President Rana Azeem while talking to DawnNews announced a countrywide protest against what he called 'an attack on journalism'.
