“We welcome the Arab League’s leadership in seeking an end to the horrific violence in Syria,” said Hague in a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FCO) Sunday.
“Today’s unprecedented decision to impose sanctions demonstrates that the regime’s repeated failure to deliver on its promises will not be ignored and that those who perpetrate these appalling abuses will be held to account,” he added.
Arab foreign ministers on Sunday agreed sweeping sanctions against Damascus for failing to halt a deadly crackdown on protests, as the death toll in Syria kept on climbing.
As another 23 civilians were reported dead in Syria, the 22-member Arab League announced an immediate ban on transactions with the Syrian government and central bank and a freeze on Syrian government assets in Arab countries.
Further measures including a ban on Syrian officials visiting any Arab country and the suspension of flights are to be implemented at a date to be fixed at a meeting next week.
Hague vowed to “support the Arab League’s efforts to restore peace to Syria” and warned the United Nations that it “cannot remain silent on the ongoing brutality”.
“To that end we welcome the commitment by the Arab League to engage with the UN Secretary General at the earliest opportunity to gain the UN’s support to address the situation in Syria,” added the minister.
“We will continue to keep the international community’s focus on Syria until there is an end to the bloodshed”.
