Pride, Prejudice and Zombies
Just when you thought you'd read or seen all possible versions of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, came Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, a 2009 parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. The novel, which credits Austen as a co-author, takes place in an alternative universe where zombies roam the English countryside in Regency era England and martial arts and weapons training are just as important as finding the perfect husband. Here, protagonist Elizabeth Bennet is not just feisty, but a seasoned zombie killer. The book was so popular that is it inspired a graphic novel and a video game. The film adaptation, set to release in 2016, promises to be a blockbuster film of the year and stars Lily James, Charles Dance, Lena Headey and Sam Riley amongst others.
Les Misérables
Victor Hugo, the French author and poet behind classic novels such Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) spent 17 years perfecting his novel Les Misérables, before it got published. During that period, whenever he had a bad case of 'writer's block', the author would lock himself inside a room with only a pen and paper and write furiously. It is also widely believed that he would order his servant to take away 'every stitch of clothing' as well so that he could write without the distraction of having clothes. Les Misérables was finally published in 1862 and despite having mostly negative critical reactions, was a commercial success.
