What is an effective way to get rid of lice?
 - Name withheld
Lice must be dealt with the moment you notice it. After shampooing and washing your hair, make sure you do a final rinse with a little warm water mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties and can kill lice before they multiply further. Combing the hair with a fine-toothed lice comb will also help get rid of lice. Always rinse the comb thoroughly before using it so that you don't reintroduce lice.
This summer, we went to Bangladesh and from the day we landed, my mother had severe allergies - her hands and face were itching. A doctor there gave her some medicines and it seemed to have worked, but when we returned to Dubai, the itching began again, particularly on her face. Could you please suggest a herbal remedy that will help her?

The itching could be due to dry skin, strong medication, extremely hot showers or, in some cases, stress. Your mother should avoid hot showers and instead do a final rinse with a few cups of water mixed with two tbsps of baking soda. Alternatively, you can also make a pouch from muslin cloth and fill it with a cup of oats and add it to the water. After rinsing, pat dry and then apply a tbsp of Vaseline mixed with a few drops of lavender oil to the skin. This will help soothe the skin. Baking soda and oats are softening and soothing agents.
Some time last year, I had dandruff at the back of my head. Now, it has spread all over and shows no signs of going away. Please help!

Dandruff can cause lots of problems - it can cause hair fall, infect the skin, block acne, especially on the forehead, and can also, in some cases, weaken your eyesight. To treat dandruff, warm some olive oil and massage it onto your scalp and leave on for 20 minutes. Shampoo and do a final rinse with warm water mixed with a tsp of baking soda. Baking soda is very effective in getting rid of the dandruff and olive oil is a rich nourishing oil for the scalp.Do this twice a week for best results.

My 10-year-old daughter had a dandruff problem for about a month. I consulted the doctor and he prescribed a dandruff shampoo and said that the reason for the outbreak was puberty. Now, the dandruff is gone, but I am still worried. If it comes back, can I follow the same remedy that you suggested to a 14-year-old girl in the previous issue of wknd.? Also, my daughter's hair is very thin, so could you please suggest an easy and effective home remedy for thicker hair?
- Rahmath
The doctor is right; dandruff sometimes occurs when children go through puberty. Massage a tbsp of warm olive oil mixed with a tsp of lime juice and a tsp of castor oil to her hair. Leave on overnight and shampoo off the next day. Do this three times a week. Castor oil is a thickening agent, the lime juice is a cleanser and the olive oil helps to nourish the scalp.
I am a 15-year-old boy with tanned skin. I have been applying tomato juice to my face every night and it has actually helped to lighten my skin. However, I have pimples, marks and blackheads. Could you suggest a remedy that does not include honey or anything sticky for my problem? Also, is there a faster way to lighten skin?

Mix one tsp of tomato juice, a tsp of lemon juice and half a tsp of rose water. Using a cotton ball dipped in this mixture, apply all over your skin. Repeat when dry. Leave on overnight. This will brighten your skin and clear up the tan in no time. Remember to avoid strong sunlight and always use sun protection at least 20 minutes before stepping out. Rose water is a skin toner and tomato, like lemon, has lightening properties, with the added benefit of protecting the skin from the sun.
