Emerald Palace Kempinski, which opened on The Palm late last year, has a certain regal air about it. And, no wonder - the hotel is actually inspired by opulent European palaces of the 18th century, complete with domes that glow green in the evenings. Four valet drivers, dressed impeccably in gloves and tails, took my car and showed me into this exquisite space that featured, among other things, ornamental ceilings, gilded corridors and soft music. If you're heading to their spa, it's a taste of what to expect.

Cinq Mondes Spa (which translates to 'five worlds' in French) is a Paris-based establishment with branches across the world. My elevator doors opened to perfectly symmetrical corridors, soft golden lighting, curved walls and the babbling of a fountain. I followed it to find the reception, where I revelled over the luxury with a hot towel.
As my masseuse, Sheila, started to show me around, I realised just how easy it would be to get lost amidst the luxurious facilities. Not only was the space sprawling, some walls seemed to open into doors - including the door which happened to be my treatment room. Then again, who wouldn't mind getting lost in this splendour?
Therapy time

I had opted for a one hour Balinese massage that promised the use of acupuncture and stretching - all while being relaxing. Was that possible? I wanted to find out. Sheila began the treatment by gently washing my feet with a papaya scrub - a staple gesture for all treatments, she told me. After I lay down on a heated bed (a touch I appreciated), the sound of a small bell announced the beginning of my massage. I was asked to take two deep breaths, and then Sheila began working her magic. The massage featured slow stretches and gentle rotations of the arms and feet, and acupuncture was especially used on my upper back region. And, I discovered, it was very relaxing indeed.
What we loved...
The facilities are actually gorgeous. Cinq Mondes Spa is like a soothing oasis in the middle of the impressive hotel. From the symmetrical curved corridors to the wooden motifs on the walls to the shades of cream that envelope the place, it is both cosy and calming.
What we didn't...
While I did get around efficiently, I don't think I managed to see the entire space which, I believe, boasts one of Dubai's largest indoor pools. The changing room area was a bit confusing - I forgot the number to my locker and it took a surprising amount of time to locate. Also, my treatment room was a tad small.
