I am a 45-year-old man with scanty and dry hair. I have tried using all types of oils, but it has only resulted in an itchy scalp and, lately, small bumps as well. Please suggest a remedy.

Your dry, itchy scalp is probably due to a low intake of water. Drink 8-12 glasses of water every day. Massage the scalp with a simple, but creamy and nourishing treatment of almond milk (natural or organic only). Rinse after two hours. Done thrice a week, your scalp will be noticeably nourished and you will see healthy hair growth. Almonds are rich in antioxidants, give the scalp and hair a smooth texture, and help repair the scalp too. Avoid using hair dryers.
Last year, you had suggested a home remedy for my hair fall and dandruff, and also my pimples. Unfortunately, I couldn't procure the tea tree oil. My 13-year-old daughter has started getting black spots on her face too. Could you please suggest a remedy for both these issues that does not involve tea tree oil?
  • Mariam
Tea tree oil is easily available at many pharmacies and nutrition stores. But as a replacement, mix together one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this on your face to get rid of pimples and marks. For a dandruff cure and to curb hair fall, mix two tablespoons of olive oil with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of black pepper and massage this into your scalp and hair. Leave in for a few hours, or overnight if you wish. Done twice a week, this scalp massage removes dandruff and arrests hair fall. Olive oil is nourishing for the scalp, lemon cleanses the scalp of dandruff, and black pepper stimulates circulation.
Is changing my shampoo frequently advisable? And could you also suggest a natural routine to get glowing skin?

If a shampoo suits you, then there is no need to change it. You have not mentioned your skin type, but as a general rule, papaya is excellent for both exfoliating dead skin and brightening the complexion.
I am a 13-year-old boy with very thin hair. I shampoo it every other day, and the days that I don't shampoo, my hair gets very greasy. What can I do to make my hair grow thicker, and make it less greasy?

Mix one tablespoon of green tea with one tablespoon of aloe vera gel and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Apply this mask to your hair 20 minutes before shampooing. Avoid hot water while rinsing hair and stay away from spicy food. Drink green tea, lemon mint juice, fresh fruit juice, and reduce your caffeine intake. Green tea is a rich antioxidant, aloe vera cleanses and adds body to the hair, and lemon juice reduces oils by shrinking and cleansing pores.
I am a regular reader of your column and I hope you can suggest a remedy for my facial melasma. I am 35 years old and fair-skinned. The melasma patches are on my cheeks. I have consulted many dermatologists and tried many creams, but it's a recurring problem. I'm careful about avoiding sun exposure, as my skin starts burning and the spots become more apparent if I step out in the sun. I'm writing to you as a last resort.

This is the best home remedy for you: grate a potato and extract its juice. Mix one teaspoon of this juice with a teaspoon of aloe vera gel and two drops of vitamin E oil. Apply this over the melasma spots and leave on for an hour or more every day, even overnight if you wish. Rinse with cold water. If you prefer using it only during the day, then dab vitamin E oil on the dark patches every night. Potato is rich in vitamin C, and helps lighten the skin. Vitamin E is a rich antioxidant, protecting from the effects of pollution, and aloe vera cleanses and calms the skin. Never go out in the sun without protection, such as a hat and sunscreen.
