I once chance upon a YouTube video - the link showed up while I was watching Katia Melua's rendition of No fear of heights for The Tourist (on YouTube). The seven- or eight-minute handheld camera-made video was a step-by-step to "getting her look".
Her, in this case, was Angelina Jolie, The Tourist's leading lady. A lot of people had problems with the way she looked in the film (too scrawny, jaw jutting out a little too much etc), but I thought she'd never looked better. Which is why I decided to watch this makeover vid. So, there was this woman, who looks nothing like Ms Jolie; seven minutes later (I suspect, in real time it was much longer), she could actually give Angie (who, I'm sure, also spent a substantial amount of time morphing into someone who looked the way she did as Elise) a run for her money.
The power of makeup, and getting a makeover. That's probably why we have these 'with makeup and without makeup' galleries of celebrities (mostly women) on almost all lifestyle websites: to get a grip of the wonders imparted on a face once the (makeup) artist is done with his/her gig. And still we wonder why there's no other business like the beauty business? Neha Dadarkar is a Dubai-based makeup artiste who likes to give regular women (and men) a chance to be 'made up' like their favourite stars. I've seen some of the transformations - the 'befores' and 'afters' - and let me tell you, they're quite spectacular. The Rani Mukherji makeover? You'd think it's Rani herself. Go ahead, make out for yourself.
Zeenat Aman remains one of Bollywood's great enigmas. No, not because of her avant garde style way back in the Seventies and Eighties, but because of how her career - that was beset by problems of a personal nature - panned out. Is she a write-off yet? With Zeenat, you never can tell. In Bollywood this week, it's a brush with the original pin-up girl.
National Day is coming up, so gear yourself for some traditional treats from this region. Kitchen Classics caters. In Pursuits, we go on a breakfast trail: why has the classic English breakfast been rendered so unhealthy? In another feature, Singapore-based chef-cum-food stylist Janice Wong tells us about edible art; how she combined her love for food - especially desserts - with her love for art, and came up trumps.
All this and much more.
Enjoy reading wknd. and have a great weekend!
