For a business which thrives on the superficial, Mahira Khan is a startling exception. For someone who is adored as a beauty icon, she possesses an extremely down-to-earth attitude. One of Pakistan's brightest stars, she is slowly making her presence felt by winning hearts and awards all over the world. On the eve of 15th Lux Style Awards in Karachi, while she was getting ready for her first ever live performance, she spoke about her much awaited film Raees with Shah Rukh Khan and her recent red carpet appearances which have made her every fashionista's favourite.
You recently made a red carpet appearance at Vogue Beauty Awards in a Monisha Jaisingh gown. How was the experience?
It was an amazing experience. Initially I was thinking what do I do but then I let the stylist and the creative team handle the look for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience of the Vogue Beauty Awards in Mumbai. Everything was completely new for me. When I am attending an event in Pakistan, I know the entire team because I have a bit of background and history at the red carpets there. But thanks to Vogue India for being such an amazing host and taking good care of me. They made me feel extremely special.
Do you enjoy dressing up?
I enjoy dressing up very rarely, but when I do get into the mood then I ensure it's completely worth the effort because there are a bunch of people whose names are at stake with the entire look such as designers, stylists and make-up artists. On a daily basis you will generally find me in very casual and simple attire.
Who are your favourite go to designers when it comes to red carpet events?
Well if I have to constantly go to one designer then it has to be Feeha Jamshed.
Your Shahira Lasheen gown at the Lux Style Awards has become the talk of the town. It also won you the best dressed celeb on the red carpet. What was the thought process behind choosing it?
It took my stylist a month to discover this exceptional upcoming designer in Egypt, Shahira Lasheen. And when I had a look at it, I was sure that this is what I will wear for the awards night. As the gown itself was extremely voluminous, we had kept the styling very minimal. So in a way we had to strike the right balance.
Which is the most difficult part of movies - acting in them, promoting them or waiting for the release? Which part do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy acting a lot so it is definitely not the difficult part. Promotions have become absolutely necessary to make the public aware of what's coming their way. It is also an opportunity to connect with many fans across the world. So it's clear, that the waiting bit is the most difficult part.
Going forward what can fans expect from you next ?
I am doing this film which I am very very excited about. It's very challenging and I might be taking some risk which hopefully will be worth it. I just want to push myself as an actor and this project is giving me all the opportunity. Let's hope all goes well.
There have been recent rumours about you being upset due to the delayed release of Raees. Considering it is a much anticipated movie which lots of people are looking forward to how do you feel about it?
Well you just said it yourself that they are plain rumours. The producers are handling the film in the best interest of everyone and there are reasons behind selecting a particular release date. Obviously you feel concerned because you have planned few things in a certain way but I am definitely not upset. I am taking up more work. So I would say there is no truth in it.
