I was locked up and sexually abused in an apartment in Deira, disclosed 33-year-old Seema (not her original name) hailing from Kollam district in Kerala in an interview with an Indian television channel.
According to Seema, she arrived in Dubai via Coimbatore on a visit visa offered by an agent. “He offered me an employment visa as a housemaid and charged Rs15,000. But later, I discovered that it was a visit visa and the sexual abuse started the very first day I arrived in Dubai. I was taken to a flat in Deira from the airport and the abuse started the moment I arrived in the flat. When I tried to resist, they burnt me with an iron and a cigarette. They locked me up in the flat with five other girls, and every day a different man came and raped me.”
Seema revealed that around 20 to 30 men abused her daily for a year-and-a-half. “They gave me pills to stop my menstrual cycle for up to six months. Whenever a customer was brought to the apartment, I was not even allowed to finish eating my food. They never allowed me to go out and never paid me any money. To date, I have only sent about Rs20,000 to my family in India.”
“I have not seen how Dubai looks like, locked up in the apartment all day and night,” she said, sobbing and praying each day to at least get a chance to meet her children. She disclosed that she could only manage to run away from the clutches of the agent when they were being moved to another apartment. “I fled and requested help from social workers. I just want to go back and live with my children. But my passport is with the man who is running the brothel. I hope that I return home soon,” she said, adding that five other girls are also in the brothel and they were also trapped in the racket. “They also want to escape from that hell. I hope somebody will help them,” hopes Seema.
According to a social worker, the immigration authorities were immediately informed about Seema’s case who was arrested and is presently in an immigration jail in Al Quoz. “We are trying for an outpass to repatriate her home. We have also informed the Indian Consulate and hope that the outpass will be issued soon. The immigration authorities also offered to pledge all the necessary help,” said a social worker.
No official from the Indian Consulate was available to comment on the issue. It is learnt that a lot of girls are brought into the region by sex racketeers from India to be used for prostitution. Two weeks ago, the Sharjah Police rescued a girl from a den in Al Mamzar area, it was reported.
