Baniyas Cooperative Society, one of the oldest buildings in the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Highway, caught fire on Wednesday.
The society houses many shops, foreign money exchange among others.
The fire started at 4:00pm in the evening. Soon fire engines were pressed into service.
"The fire must have destroyed everything. It was a big fire," a resident told Khaleej Times.
Power was switched off in the area and all the shops on the street were shut.
As many as 5-7 fire engines, ambulance and police vans were engage in operations even at 9 pm.
The cause of fire is not known.
