The UAE's Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) on Sunday, May 10, said the fixed broadband speed has been increased to 100 Mbps due to high improve for audio and video streaming in the country.
"The speed of fixed broadband has been increased to 100 Mbps, as a result of the measures taken by Telecommunication Regulatory Authority. This aims at securing high internet speeds that ensure smooth running of online work and distance learning, securing the best quality of video and voice calls," it said in a tweet on Sunday.
Since the UAE authorities announced work from home and distance learning for schools and other educational institutions in March, the need for increased speed of fixed broadband has increased substantially. This decision will certainly help the UAE residents as well as students to perform their work efficiently as it will reduce latency.
In March, Etisalat had said that it expected overall data traffic to surge exponentially, and as a result had boosted both its local network capacity and international data capacity.
Demand for broadband has been consistently on the rise recently, rising from 90 Mbps in December to 93 Mbps in January, 95 Mbps in February and 100 Mbps in March.
According to the Speedtest Global Index, the UAE had the quickest mobile internet speed in the world in March, with downloads speeds of 83.52 Mbps, upload speeds of 21.79 Mbps and latency of 27 milliseconds. In terms of fixed broadband, the country rose three places from its February ranking to 26th globally, with downloads speeds of 100.95 Mbps, upload speeds of 51.17 Mbps and latency of 11 milliseconds, Oxford Business Group said.
TRA had earlier announced that both Etisalat and du would provide free internet data via mobile phones to families with no home internet access.
