Declaring 2017 as the Year of Giving will pave the way for an exceptional partnership between the public and private sectors towards greater and more effective community development work, the Dubai Community Development Authority (CDA) has said.
"The instructions made by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai - to instantly begin fulfilling the President's directives by laying out the frameworks to put the Year of Giving in place - will definitely contribute to boosting the activities of all institutions, authorities and government bodies in this field," CDA director-general Ahmed Abdul Karim Julfar said in a statement sent to Khaleej Times.
"The declaration will help push the wheel of contribution to the community development works greatly and effectively in the coming year," Julfar said.
Julfar also pointed out that "acts of goodness and giving are deep-rooted in the UAE. "The country is a land of constant giving. It gained number one in the world in terms of giving, and the entire world looks at it with respect and appreciation," he added.
According to Julfar, there are around 6,000 volunteers registered with the CDA who did 65,000 volunteering hours, saving about Dh5 million of government spending last year.
The ERC head of volunteers also welcomed the President's declaration, saying "more people will now be more inspired to do volunteer work that will bring positivity and happiness to the country".
"This declaration of Year of Giving will encourage more Emiratis and residents to share their talents, time and resources," Rashed Ali Al Yammahi, Emirates Red Crescent - Dubai volunteers section head, told Khaleej Times.
The Dar Al Ber Society (DABS) has also affirmed its support to the government declaration.
DABS chairman Khalfan Khalifa Al Mazrouie said: "The UAE shall always remain the homeland of goodness and the ceaseless spring of humanity under the prudent leadership, with the help of kind-hearted people, and based on deeply-rooted heritage, civilisation, customs and traditions, and kind gestures."
"This absolutely affirms the fact that the UAE is a country of giving, and the Emirati people are the true children of the late Shaikh Zayed," he added, indicating that DABS is geared up to take an efficient part in the new nationwide drive and make it a big success.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed, executive director, DABS, said the society will launch a series of activities and events to mark the 'Year of Giving' across the UAE in pursuance of the drive of the President.
"All private institutions and civil society organisations are urged to communicate and coordinate with each other and all the bodies concerned to meet the supreme goals of this promising Year of Giving, and reinforce the values and ethics of social responsibility," he said.
