The UAE Embassy in New Delhi has called on Emirati citizens visiting or residing in India to ensure that a receipt is given when exchanging currency, following the Indian government's decision to withdraw the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, and to update the Rs 500 note, and introduce a new note of Rs 2,000 denomination.
UAE Ambassador to New Delhi Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Banna said the Indian law does not provide for bringing Indian currency from outside India. It, however, allows the traveller to bring a foreign currency, up to $10,000.
He urged Emirati citizens traveling to India to carry credit cards, for use in hotels, restaurants and hospitals due to the current shortage of rupee supply.
"If it is necessary to carry a cash amount, it has to be in US dollar or euro. It is also necessary to make sure that the Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes are the ones that are now on circulation," he added.
Ambassador Al Banna stressed the need for UAE citizens to respect laws and regulations in all countries they visit, and to cooperate with the authorities there.
