It is 7:00am on a non-working day of Friday but Abu Dhabi resident Nazzim Abdul Salam and a motley crew of few more have hit the road to Dubai. It is a purposeful drive as they all are Kerala Public Service Commission job aspirants. Getting a government job back home in Kerala is one aim, one business and one desire for all of them.
Dig this: Last year some 1.7 million people wrote Kerala Public Service Commission's exam for a few thousand clerical posts. However, expats in the UAE were always on the back foot while preparing for exams because of lack of coaching centres. But now aspirants like Salam can have a sigh of relief as Kerala's premier institute Brilliance College has opened a new coaching centre in Bur Dubai area.
Salam said a government job makes life secure. He has, however, realised this at the twelfth hour.
"I am 39 years old and this is my last chance. It was only last year that I got interested in government job. I have so far attempted two exams and preparing for two more."
His wife in Kerala has made it to the main rank list of a government job.
"If I too get a job then we can be together. Government posts are secure compared to private firm jobs. My parents were also government employees."
Studying at a coaching centre is a new experience for Salam.
"At 39 years, I am reliving my college and tuition classes. This coaching centre has opened here at the right time for me. This will be a great boon for many job aspirants," said Salam, who works at a manufacturing company in Abu Dhabi.
Talking about the gruelling Friday schedule, he said: "We as a group leave Abu Dhabi between 7-7.30am and reach Burjuman by 9:00am. Our 'holiday batch' starts by 9:30am and gets over by 5:30pm. We will be back here by 7-7:30pm. We are putting so much effort and hope for a positive result," Salam added.
Brilliance College started operations in Dubai this January. Institute manager Rakesh S.R. said this is for the first time the coaching centre is operating outside Kerala.
"This makes it our 153rd branch. We started first six-month batch on January 17 and second batch will start from July 17. We have regular batches on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mostly of housewives and working professionals and another holiday batch on Friday for those residing in other emirates than Dubai.
"We have facility to pay fees in installment so that people from all background can study. There are daily test papers and monthly two model exams. Most people come here in age group of 25 to 33 years. Anyone attending these classes regularly will surely get a government job. This is also helpful for those preparing for bank and central government jobs."
The institute has four experienced faculty members drawn from Kerala.
Faculty member Vignesh Thankaraj said: "People are coming from faraway places and have busy lifestyle. We have remodelled our teaching style to suit them. They need to just follow our classes and notes. A systematic approach will surely help land a government job."
