Two collegiate teams from the UAE are competing at the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2016, an annual competition for the region's aspiring young engineers "to build vehicles of the future that can go the farthest on the least amount of energy."
Team UAE is represented in the 'prototype category' by The Higher College of Technology Sharjah which will use gasoline (petrol) to fuel their vehicle and the American University of Sharjah which has designed a car driven by diesel.
A total of 119 teams from 17 countries including Australia, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Singapore are competing at a special street circuit in Manila to showcase their innovation and creativity to design, build, test and drive ultra-energy-efficient vehicles.
The closing ceremony and awards presentation will be held on Sunday at Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel.
Student teams are challenged to stretch the boundaries of fuel efficiency in a real world urban environment, and winners are determined by the mileage achieved on a litre of fuel, rather than speed.
The Philippines have the biggest number of contingent with 28 teams competing on home soil while two-time overall winner Thailand will try to defend their crown.
Teams compete in two categories: Prototype and UrbanConcept. The Prototype category will see student teams entering cars of the future - streamlined vehicles focused on maximising fuel efficiency through innovative design elements, such as drag reduction; while the UrbanConcept category will focus on more "roadworthy" fuel-efficient vehicles.
Students will have the freedom to exercise their creativity in technical and design aspects, with the condition that all vehicles entered meet specific safety rules.
Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2016 will see 24 on-track awards with prize money of $2,000 for winners in both Prototype and UrbanConcept categories.
