Gerard Reymond, the well-loved founder of the iconic Gerard Café in Jumeirah, has died. He was 68.
According to official statements posted on the café's social media pages, a condolence meeting will be held on Saturday, from 9am to 5pm at Gerard Café, Magrudy's Centre.
"In our remembrance of a Legend in Dubai. Our great Gérard who touched so many hearts. We already miss you. Love you papa," the posts on Facebook and Instagram read.
The exact cause of his death is yet to be ascertained.
Tributes poured in on social media, with loving messages posted in remembrance of Reymond. Dima El Atab wrote on Facebook: "So sorry. RIP Gerard. Will not forget the beautiful conversations and positive spirit. It was a pleasure working with you."
Reymond arrived from France to the UAE in 1978, opening his first coffee shop in Sharjah in the same year, according to the cafe's website.
"Born in the south of France, Gérard was accustomed to Mediterranean conviviality and good food. He honed his skills in the patisserie trade, crafting and learning from the best in the industry," it said.
"At the age of 28, the young entrepreneur decided he wanted to bring the wonderful recipes to other parts of the world. In 1978, he left his native France for the UAE, to start his adventure. He wanted to create and refine French products, as well as perfect the art of making coffee."
Just a few years later, by 1981, his Gérard Café became known as the go-to meet-up place of coffee devotees and other artisan crafters in the industry.
