Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is now offering expats a 'golden chance' to get a driving licence without having to take lessons.

However, a number of conditions have been set out: First, they must hold a valid licence from their home countries, and then, they have to pass the RTA driving exams —theory and road test — in one take. An RTA call centre confirmed that this initiative called 'Golden Chance' came into effect on April 1.

Earlier, Khaleej Times published an explainer on how qualified expats can directly exchange their country's driving licences for a local one without taking classes or tests. Residents from 43 countries can avail of this privilege.

However, the new RTA initiative gives residents from non-exempt countries that one-time chance to breeze through the rigorous process of obtaining a UAE licence. After completing the registration procedures and paying certain fees, qualified applicants can instantly take the theory and road tests.

This is a one-time chance: If the applicant fails the test, they will have to enrol for regular classes.

Here's a guide:

How to apply for the Golden Chance initiative?

To apply for the Golden Chance initiative, you can visit a driving centre.

How much do I have to pay?

It will range on the basis of the driving school. However, costs are expected to be around Dh2,200 (approximately). These will cover the costs of opening a file, tests, licence issuance etc.

Will I need to take any prior training?

No, the applicant will not be required to take any prior training. However, they can opt for the same with an additional charge.

What happens if I fail the test?

If the applicant fails the Golden Chance direct test then they will have to enrol for regular classes.
