An 18-year-old Arab is standing trial in Dubai after he was caught growing cannabis plants in his flat. The Dubai Court of First Instance was told the defendant was caught during a police raid on February 29. Three plants weighing 405g were found grown in his flat.
Over 94g of hashish was seized from his place. The youth is charged with growing cannabis, and possession and use of hashish.
An Arab girl, a minor, who was arrested with him on the day of the incident, was referred to the Juveniles Court. Two other Arab men were referred to the Court of Misdemeanours.
An anti-narcotics police lieutenant said they were tipped off that the defendant used and possessed drugs. "On February 29, we arrested him and three others who were then with him."
Apart from the plants, quantities of hashish were also found in the fridge and under a table in the defendant's flat in Business Bay. "The accused confessed that the three plants being grown in his flat belonged to him. He claimed that he grew them after he found their seeds in the flat. One of his companions had bought those seeds at a party in Dubai. The accused admitted he had given drugs to the girl - who was caught with them during the raid - twice for free," the lieutenant told the public prosecution investigator.
The companion told the police that he bought the hashish found in the flat from another accomplice.
Another police lieutenant said they searched the villa where one of the defendant's companions (who sold drugs for amounts between Dh500 and Dh1,000) lived in Mirdiff, but no drugs were found there. "We found a quantity of hashish in the car he drove."
The 18-year-old defendant has been placed in detention.
The trial has been adjourned to September 13.
