The Ajman Police have arrested two Africans who used the spit-and-rob modus operandi.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Col Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Ajman Police, said the police received several complaints about people being swindled in this fashion.
According to the police, the suspect would first spit on an unsuspecting resident and then apologise and offer to wipe it off. He would thus divert the victim's attention and pick his pocket.
Col Al Matroushi said the police immediately formed a team to identify the culprits and launched an intensified investigation. The officers watched the suspects as they approached a susceptible victim. As he entered a shop the two men followed him. And the police soon arrested them.
During interrogation, the suspects - D.T and T.K - confessed that they had stolen Dh57,000 in the same fashion.
Col. Al Matroushi, stressed that the police will not tolerate crime in the country and urged the public to inform the police about any suspicious activities.
