The Abu Dhabi Police are stepping up efforts to adopt advanced technology and use artificial intelligence for its services in the future. Three months back, the department bought a robot from China and it hopes to soon use more such robots for administrative and other purposes.
"This robot reflects the evolution of Abu Dhabi Police since its establishment in 1957. It shows how Abu Dhabi Police are embracing advanced technology. The robot is a basic model, which can be driven around. There are controls on each hand to move and a speaker as well. We hope to use such robots for different kinds of services," a police officer said, while elaborating about the model on display at Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex).
For now, the robot will be kept at Abu Dhabi Police Transportation and Workshop. He noted robots will play a key role in establishing smart police stations and offering better services to people.
"This is start of a process by which Abu Dhabi Police will embrace robotics. In future, more robots could be introduced that can provide better services. There will be use of artificial intelligence too," he pointed out.
The main purpose of the robot displayed at Adihex was to grab the attention of children. "We wanted to break the barrier between us and the kids. Most of the kids are in awe of the police. This robot helped to eliminate that fear and reach out to the children. It sends a message to kids that police not only catch criminals but they can also entertain."
Kids' patrol
The police also have a 'kids' patrol, which travels to school conducting awareness classes.
"We have police car with 'kids' label on it that has been covering schools for some time now. Our instructors visit schools and make children understand about police and their services. The instructors tell them how we should perform our duties. We are fully booked throughout the year as many schools request for such classes," the officer added.
