A total of 820 abandoned vehicles were impounded by the Ras Al Khaimah Police since May this year.
Brigadier Dr Mohamed Saeed Al Humaidi, director-general of central operations, said the reported vehicles have been tarnishing the image of the city. "They have been impounded from the roads, districts, workshops and garages here. Our teams located vehicles that distort the image of the emirate."
A warning notice is initially placed on all the unattended vehicles found, he explained. "The owners of these vehicles were given a grace period of 10 days to remove them. "Failing to do so, the vehicles were impounded.
"Those without number plates are instantly confiscated. Also, if the car was old, dirty, in terrible condition, unfit for running, or partially damaged, no grace period is given - the vehicle involved is instantly seized and shifted the RAK Police impoundment yard. The same applies to the vehicles offered for sale in undesignated areas, along with those with body damages, no tyres, no roof, no doors, no engine, deflated tyres, or damaged windows.".
Any vehicle with unlicenced changed colour, with damages in the dashboard or without seats shall also be impounded with immediate effect, he warned. "The owners of abandoned vehicles who failed to shift them in time, may only recover their impounded vehicles after making payment of due fine."
