A staggering 448,500 speeding violations in three years have been recorded by fixed and mobile radars in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, and up to 250,000 drivers fined for these violations have benefited from the discount system launched in October 2016, said Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, general commander of RAK Police.
As per the initiative, erring drivers shall get a 50 per cent discount on their traffic fines if they make the payment in the first 50 days, he explained. "The discount shall be 30 per cent if the fine is paid between 51 and 80 days."
The drive which covers all types of vehicles, including private, government, and corporate cars and buses, has helped bring down the daily traffic accidents from 120 to 40, he revealed. "The same applies to serious accidents which have significantly dropped."
The discount system has been integrated in the Ministry of Interior system long ago, he underlined. "Drivers can make payment through the smart services anywhere anytime."
Brig Jamal Al Tair, director general of resources and assisting services department, said they have given a grace period of 50 days so that more drivers can avail the discount drive.
"This period is enough even for travelling drivers to come back and ease their financial burdens."
Brig Dr Mohammed Al Humaidi, director of central operations, said the drive has turned "erring drivers into police assistants".
"Those who have had their fines dropped wish to show gratitude by reporting any traffic accident, erring driver or a motorist escaping after an accident."
