The RAK department of public works and services, all set for the rainy season, has initiated a massive infrastructure project to develop and boost the performance of the road network in the emirate.
Ahmed Al Hammadi, director-general of the department, said they have also started building a new network for draining rain water at the Halila area that lies in to the north of the emirate. " The drainage network (especially to drain out rain water) is 6km long."
The level of some roads here is to be adjusted whereas the network of public services, including water, electricity, and phone supplies are to be secured as well, he added.
"A big part of the planned infrastructure projects is for the benefit of the Emirati residents at the Halila area where 30 houses have been built recently."
The department has also started building new road diversions on the Siji road, known as Kadra-Shawka road, for maintenance and development works, and to gear up for the rains.
"Residents of the southern regions of RAK have repeatedly complained about the many cracks and bumps in the major roads that caused congestions and even fatal accidents," he said, noting that the scheme is meant to ease the suffering of the residents there.
The contracting company assigned to do the project will replace the old layer of the asphalt with a new one along the 18km long and 8m wide arterial road, he explained.
"The new projects involve the maintenance of some roads using a new technology whereby the old asphalt is recycled and used."
Hammadi said the department has also started developing the Etisalat road and is building a new roundabout there.
"The department is all set to re-plan the whole area in collaboration with the traffic department of RAK Police to bolster traffic flow and curb traffic accidents.
Noting, he said they have finished building a new stream bridge close to the cultural centre. "A side metal fence has been fixed as well to protect vehicles from falling into water."
