A factory found repacking up to 5,321kg of expired food items has been shut down by the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality.

Munther bin Shekar Al Zaabi, director-general, RAK Municipality, said they were tipped off about the violating factory.

"A special team swung into action to verify the tip-off and collect all possible information."

The civic body inspectors, teaming up with the law enforcement bodies, stormed the factory, he added.

"Large amounts of expired food items, weighing up to 5,321kg, were found ready to be repacked and distributed."

All the food items, mainly cakes and its ingredients, tools and machines therein, have been confiscated, he pointed out.

Samples of the seized cakes were sent to the municipal lab for analysis, he added. "The tests proved that the items had expired and were unfit for human consumption."

The factory was immediately closed.

"The seized food items are to be destroyed as per the prescribed rules and regulations, while hefty fines and legal action will be slapped against the violators."
