Residents of a few interior areas in Ras Al Khaimah have complained that many power transmitter boxes are left open posing a grave safety risk to people, especially children.
Ali Rashid, an Emirati of Azan area told Khaleej Times that he had complained about these transmitter boxes several times but without any action on the side of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa). "I and some other people here have repeatedly complained about these uncovered and unfenced power boxes, but only got promises."
Mohammed Salem, an Emirati of Al Rams area, said he alerted Fewa about one of these unfenced transmitters. "I saw many kids playing close to an uncovered transmitter, and they were about to touch the electric disconnectors."
A source at Fewa told Khaleej Times that it is not their responsibility to secure the uncovered and unfenced electric transmitters.
"The RAK Municipality is the entity responsible for choosing the right location of the transmitter with no negative impact on health as well as personal and public properties."
Some unknown people, possibly youth and kids, have purposefully damaged some power transmitters and disconnectors, he added. "Fewa instantly responds to all complaints in coordination with all departments concerned."
The RAK Municipality, meanwhile, said they have no problem installing fences around these power transmitters to protect young children and people against electrocution, yet without distorting the image of the district or residential block.
Munzir bin Shukr, director-general of the RAK Municipality, said they have no problem fencing transmitter boxes. "However, this should be in a way that does not affect the image of the city."
Eng Mohammed Saleh, director-general of Fewa, earlier said that up to 387 power transmitters and Remote Management Units (RMU) have been surrounded with walls in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
"Some 150 transmitters and RMUs are to be fenced as well in the emirate, yet after getting the necessary approval from the civic body here."
Saleh urged the residents to approach the Fewa offices in the emirate so that they can take due procedures to secure these transmitter boxes in coordination with the local bodies concerned.
