The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Sharjah has started paying Dh10 million as compensation to the owners of old taxi number plates in the emirate.
The compensation is annually paid to the owners of old taxi number plates which are now being operated by Sharjah Taxi and the three franchise companies operating in the emirate.
All the due bonuses have already been transferred to the bank accounts of eligible 5,003 owners of old taxis or the bank accounts of their heirs, according to a top official.
Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, Director of RTA Sharjah for Transport Affairs, on Sunday said that the each and every owner of an old number plate is compensated with Dh2,000 as an annual compensation. "These are apart from Dh30 million also distributed as annual compensation."
"Dh500 is paid to owners of city taxis whereas the owners of off city cabs are compensated with monthly Dh 1,000," he said. "As such the total bonuses and compensations paid to Emirati owners of old taxi number plates collect Dh40 million per annum."
The move reflects how His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah is keen to support all segments of the society, particularly low-income ones, enhance social solidarity, and look after their social affairs, Eng Suwaihi underlined.
"The total annual bonus distributed last year was increased to Dh2,000 for each and every old taxi owner. This rise represented a 100 percent as compared to the Dh1,000 annual compensation paid in 2011 and 2012."
As per the set rules and regulations, the annual bonus is added to the monthly compensation paid to the Emirati owners of old cabs. "The compensation is only distributed to the applicants who submitted the credentials required," said Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, Director of RTA Sharjah for Transport Affairs.
RTA Sharjah has endeavored to gradually replace old vehicles with new ones, and financially compensate the Emirati owners of these cabs, he added. "However, an applicant needs to meet certain conditions to be entitled for compensation."
Applicants have to approach the new headquarters of the RTA Sharjah at the Ezra area and submit the requisite documents to avoid delay of bonus or compensation discharge, Jarwan said.
"RTA Sharjah is running a big fleet of over 5,600 taxis operated by four franchise companies," he said, urging eligible beneficiaries to contact RTA Sharjah Call Centre at (600525252) round the clock for inquiries, if any.
