Food trucks are not new to Dubai. A food truck 'park' though, spread across 1,500sqm, in the middle of nowhere has some novelty. And one called Last Exit, inspired by American fuel stations and food joints of the 1950s, has just opened on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi road (off exit 1, towards 'Sah Sheib'). As you drive in to the place, you can just tell, the place is going to do so well on Instagram. It's got all this rehashed automobiles design and several upycled elements, and some amount of landscaping, with neem trees at the back, and sprinklers watering the non-fake grass. All the bins, wash-basins, lamp shades, wall features are upcycled. One first-time visitor to the place, Jordanian national Osama Abdullah, an engineer in Dubai said, "I like it. It reminds me of my college campus in Amman. We had a lot of food trucks there".
Chicken sandwiches, short rib sandwiches, iced coffees - food and drink are available round the clock. We were told locals were trooping in at 3am for chicken sandwiches.
Visitors can drive through or dine in. There is an inside seating area where you can sit and have gelato from Dri Dri (and chat up Faisal Abdallah, the Kenyan ice cream man who likes biscotti flavour ice cream and loves reggae and his favourite song is Knowledge from the group Natural Black).
The place has 12 food trucks. Among others: Baja Fresh, Big Smoke Burger, Clinton St Bakery, Operation Felafel, Poco Loco, Starbucks. There's also an All Day Fresh convenience store (manned by two Indians from Kannur, one whose parents were film buffs and named their son Shahrukh). There are parking spaces, restrooms, prayer rooms, charge up boxes and ATMs, everything you'd expect of a highway rest stop.
Spokespersons of Meraas told Khaleej Times that the décor was sourced from the UK, USA and Sri Lanka and certain custom pieces were designed and made locally in the UAE.
We just want to know, exactly how many busted cars and dismantled cycles have found a resting place at Last Exit?

Five design elements we liked:

1. The stool seats outside made of truck tyres. We thought the little artificial turf as bum cushion was a sweet touch. Some tyres on stands had real plants growing out of them, offsetting the fake turf. Also the seating made of large wooden spindles is good solid repurposing.
2.  Old railway sleepers have been used for a walkway next to the food truck of Clinton St Bakery.
3.  Cycle chain ashtrays drilled into drums that work as tables. It's smart thinking drilling them into the tables so no one "accidentally" walks off with ashtrays thinking they'll look nice at home.
4. In the washrooms, you have to "accelerate" on a pedal to release water in the old pipes that then flows into the basin, which again, is made of old truck tires.
5. Door handles made of spanners and old fuel dispensers. Distressed blue on wood is always a good look, in any case.
