Three minors, all Arab residents, have stood trial at the Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Criminal Court for damaging and robbing several charity boxes from a number of mosques in the emirate.
As per court records, the case unfolded last month when the RAK Police apprehended the trio red-handed with the money they robbed from some charity boxes fixed at some mosques here.
Earlier to the robbery, the Central Operations Room of the RAK Police, has been informed that a number of the charity boxes fixed at some mosques in the emirate have been damaged and robbed.
The imams of the mosques told the police that some young people were seen roaming around the mosque, not praying and behaving in a weird way, following which the charity boxes were robbed.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers of RAK police, having also been alerted by undercover agents that three Arab minors are involved in robbing charity boxes at three mosques in different areas of the emirate.
Based on this, CID officers initiated investigations, set a trap, and nabbed the suspects in the act.
The defendants were referred to the RAK Public Prosecution where they admitted to their crime in front of their parents who were present during the police interrogation and prosecution investigations.
The case was referred to the RAK Criminal Court, presided over by Chief Judge Yusuf Rajab, who ordered the third suspect to appear in court on Monday to hear his defence.
A police source told Khaleej Times that the CID men had earlier arrested an 18-year-old Arab young man for robbing the cars of the worshippers while performing prayers at the mosque.
"The defendant smashed the windows of a number of cars, and robbed all the valuable items and cash he found inside."
All the mosques of the emirate, mainly the big ones where most worshippers flock to pray in congregation, were put under close surveillance, he added.
"More CID men and security patrols were deployed until the suspect was arrested red-handed."
