A vehicle inspection technician went on trial for allegedly taking a Dh9,000 bribe from a car dealer for passing a vehicle that was written off the road after an accident.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance on Thursday heard that the Filipino was caught after forging a 'pass' result for the vehicle that belonged to a Syrian man in return for a cash bribe.
The Syrian car dealer allegedly wanted a pass result for his vehicle so he could have it re-registered by the traffic and licensing department in Abu Dhabi.
Official court documents showed that the car had been severely damaged after being involved in a road accident. Authorities had to write the car off the roads after it was deemed unfit for driving.
A technical review report said the vehicle posed a threat to the safety of people occupying it and that of other road users.
After the accident, the Syrian owner of the car was also reportedly compensated for the damages by the car insurance company.
Police investigations, however, revealed that instead of disposing of the damaged car, the dealer took it to a garage for repair and wanted to register it again.
The Syrian was caught after receiving the forged pass result from the Filipino. He also had other documents required for car registration and was planning to go to the licensing department when the police arrested him.
In court, the Filipino denied forging the documents. He said his three bosses at work had forced him to sign the vehicle inspection report for the Syrian man and had threatened to terminate his work contract if he didn't comply.
The Syrian also denied the charge of giving a bribe to the Filipino.
