A detainee, who assaulted a police officer while trying to escape detention, was sentenced to three months in jail.
The Court of First Instance earlier heard the 27-year-old Egyptian man (an engineer) twisted the police corporal's arm as the latter tried to stop him from escaping the detention of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Al Muraqqabat on May 31. It found the engineer guilty of charges of assaulting an on-duty police officer and damage of public property and ordered his deportation after serving his jail time.
He damaged the false ceiling in the detention room of the police station. The damage is estimated at Dh200.
The police corporal said he began his shift at 5.30am. "The defendant was then in detention for his involvement in several theft complaints. About a half an hour later, I went out of the office to get some papers from another room. "As I was about to go back to my office, I heard some noise. I entered and found the accused had climbed over the metallic barrier and jumped down. As he walked to the other room, I tried to block his way but he twisted my arm." The officer recounted how the accused pushed him violently to the wall causing him to fall down.
The officer chased the defendant around as the latter tried in vain to find an exit.
"He then regained his cell. He resisted again as I tried along with other policemen handcuffing him and brought him under control," the corporal told the prosecutor.
The detainee caused damage to the false ceiling when he forced his way out of the cell, using the small space between the ceiling and the barrier.
A forensic report showed the assault left the officer with arm and wrist pain. The accused admitted during investigation that he tried to escape from where he was detained. The court ruling remains subject to appeal.
