A man, who allegedly was part of a gang that attacked a bank customer with pepper spray and snatched a bag full with more than half a million dirhams from him, has been jailed for six months.
The Court of First Instance convicted him on a robbery charge and also ordered his deportation.
According to prosecution records, the 37-year-old Pakistani, a jobless, had a plan with three others to stalk bank customers. His accomplices had been convicted.
On July 29 of last year, he and his accomplices waited in the parking lot of a bank in Al Rafaa and as a customer- the complainant- was walking to his bike they attacked him with pepper spray and snatched the money bag from him.
However, some passers-by chased the thief carrying the bag and recovered the money.
The defendant admitted in the investigation that he and his accomplices watched the complainant for about half an hour on that day.
They waited for him as he walked out from the bank and executed their robbery plan.
The complainant, an Indian, 42, said that he had just withdrawn Dh 510,000 belonging to the company where he worked.
"I was walking to my bike when four men attacked me. One of them pepper-sprayed me while another snatched the money bag from me."
He screamed and sought help from people around. A Yemeni salesman, 25, said that he and his brother rushed to help when they heard the man screaming. They caught the thief and called the police.
A police lieutenant quoted the accused as admitting that his part was to watch the customer inside the bank on the incident day and inform the others when he withdrew the money.
