The Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance has sentenced a 29-year-old Pakistani to six months in jail for offering a bribe to an employee of the economic development department.
The court also confiscated the Dh5,000 that was offered as the bribe. The convict - identified as M.E. - will be deported at the end of his prison sentence.
The court acquitted two other defendants - 47-year old Bangladeshi identified as J.A. and 36-year old Pakistani identified as S.Kh.
According to court documents, J.A. offered a bribe to the employee of the economic department, while M.E. and S.Kh mediated.
The legal advisor of the department informed the preventive security department about the bribe. The offer was made to approve the inspection report of the trade licence of the company that belonged to the Bangladeshi defendant.
M.E. offered between Dh15,000 and Dh20,000 to improve the inspection report, and asked that the employee help him and communicate with him on WhatsApp.
The preventive security department set a trap. The employee sent the required documents, and when the defendant came to deliver the bribe money, he was arrested with the papers in his possession.
The defendant alleged that the employee asked for money after the transaction.
