A Bangladeshi man was charged with robbery at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday. He, along with a runaway accomplice, allegedly barged into a couple's room, assaulted them and stole Dh2,000.
According to public prosecution records, the 25-year-old worker robbed the housewife of Dh2,000 after attacking her with a broken glass bottle.
He reportedly tried to snatch a gold ring from her finger and inflicted severe injuries on the woman, before fleeing the scene with his accomplice.
The case dated back to February 24 and was registered at Al Qusais police station.
The couple was staying in a shared flat in Al Nahda, according to the complainant, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi electrician.
"The flat is shared by about 10 people, families and bachelors. I stayed in a part of a room with my wife," he said. "At 5.30am on February 24, I heard someone ringing the flat door's bell. My wife answered the door and found the defendant and another man."
With a glass bottle in hand, the defendant allegedly barged into the complainant's room and told him to hand over all valuables he had.
When the accused saw the gold ring on the woman's finger, he reportedly broke the bottle and stabbed her in her left arm, in an attempt to get the ring.
The complainant, who tried to fend off the attacker, also sustained injuries in his back, upper right shoulder and right cheek.
The defendant then searched the bags in the room and stole Dh2,000.
During the public prosecution investigation, the woman - a 28-year-old Indonesian housemaid - supported her husband's statement.
The forensic report showed that the woman's medical condition was not yet stable at the time she was examined. She needed to go for other check-ups three months later to assess whether her injuries were permanent.
The trial has been adjourned to July 21.
