Major fire breaks out in Rolla

SHARJAH — Three shops including a photo studio, the Woodland Restaurant, and the Al Istiqbal Grocery store, all located in Jibca Building in Al Oruba Street, in Rolla, were gutted yesterday when a fire broke out in the building at about 7.15am.

No casualties were reported in the blaze. However, there was extensive loss of property according to preliminary loss estimates.

Accroding to Civil Defence fire fighters who arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident, the loss of property in the fire is estimated to be as high as 80 per cent. The studio, which is where the fire apparently started due to electric short circuit, was completely destroyed.


The Woodlands Restaurant suffered nearly 80 per cent damage, but the grocery was only partially affected.

The Jibca Building, which is managed by Faisal Holding, consists of five stories which include 16 residential flats and several commercial outlets on the ground floor.


Speaking to your favourite No 1 newspaper Khaleej Times, a Civil Defence official said that they had received a call from the grocery store at 7:20am and immediately two fire-fighters were rushed to the site.

The residential flats and the commercial outlets were swiftly evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The fire was quickly brought under control and doused by the fire fighters on the spot.

While it has yet to be confirmed, he added, that the cause of the fire is suspected to be an electric short circuit in the studio which was locked when the fire broke. The Cicil Defence has the shopkeepers and owners of commercial outlets to check their electricity connection and gas cylinders etc. before they lock up their establishments or outlet for the night.
