Six-year-old Aleena Khan is attempting to fast during the holy month of Ramadan for the first time. She has so far fasted "half days" and said she finds it easy. "This is the first time I'm trying to fast and I haven't experienced any difficulties," said Khan. "I do half fast almost daily. I stop eating after lunch and end my fast during Iftar time."
Khan, a grade 1 pupil at the Cambridge High School Abu Dhabi, is quite keen on fasting and wanted to fast all day long but her parents didn't want her to because of her age. The parents thought it would be good if she began "serious fasting" next Ramadan when she turns seven.
And during the holy month, the Indian girl enjoys Ramadan themed arts and craft at home to learn about her religion. "I have learned about the five pillars of Islam, including prayers and Ramadan, Iman (Love for Allah) and Sadaqa (charity)," said Khan. "I've learnt that Ramadan is a month for charity, sharing and treating others kindly."
Khan recently received a certificate of appreciation for doing her bit towards community charity. Additionally, she helps at home by arranging the Iftar table for the family.
Her mother, Sanobar Sabah, 39, has lived in Abu Dhabi all her life and cherishes Ramadan here. She said the family celebrates the month of Ramadan by engaging in community activities, teaching their kids about the significance of the month and socialising during Iftar. She hopes the children will emulate them.
"We participate in community activities whereever possible and make it a point to let the kids experience the true spirit of Ramadan," she said. "The children get to invite their friends over for Iftar. We also shop for gifts for friends and relatives together to show them the importance of giving."
