Most of the Egyptian voters in Abu Dhabi and Dubai favoured candidates of the 'For the love of Egypt' list - an electoral alliance - in the first phase of the Egyptian parliamentary elections. The first phase took place on October 18 and 19.
Consul Abdulrahman Raafat, member of the election committee in Dubai, told Khaleej Times on Tuesday that 1,384 people, originally hailing from 14 provinces in Egypt, participated in the two-day elections.
"Most of them voted for the candidates of the 'For the love of Egypt' list. However, we cannot determine the percentage of voters as there is no registration as was the case before. Whoever holds a national ID card or a machine-readable passport can participate in the polls." Official records show that some 400,000 Egyptians are staying in the UAE.
No violations were reported during the polls, he underlined. "A camera was streaming voting live to the higher judiciary elections committee in Egypt." Dr Amjad Al Gohari, cultural advisor to the Egyptian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, told Khaleej Times that 1,600 people cast their votes in Abu Dhabi. "Most of those - 1,320 voters - voted for the candidates of 'For the love of Egypt' list."
