A jobless man stood trial on Tuesday in the Court of First Instance on the charge of cursing Islam and the faithful.
The 27-year-old man Filipino man has faced two counts of insult of faith and making criminal threats. He is accused of resisting two on-duty police officers while telling them:
'I will let you see what I can do to you. I know important people in the country'.
The incident was reported on October 13 to Bur Dubai police station.
A police sergeant said during the public prosecution investigation they were informed about a problem at a house in Al Badaa.
"We found the house was being shared by several individuals. The man who called us was the accused and he claimed a Pakistani man messed up with his stuff so he called the police".
The police officers then talked to the other man. "That man told us he asked the accused to lower the sound of music during the time of prayer in respect for its prayer's sanctity. When he would not listen to him he turned the music off".
The sergeant went back to the accused and told him about the necessity to respect all religions and the sanctity of prayers, in consideration of the feelings of all the other persons living in the place.
"But I was surprised by his reaction as he began to scream and talk in a provocative manner with me. He said he would not show such respect," the sergeant told the prosecutor.
As the defendant began insulting the religion the officer told him to stop.
"He did not like what I said and continued with his verbal abuse. He then threatened me and my colleague by saying : 'I will let you see what I can do to you. I know important persons here'.
The officers took the accused by the patrol car to the police station.
The court is expected to hand down a ruling on February 7.
