A Dubai man's driving licence was suspended for three months after he accumulated 36 black points because of reckless driving by his sons.

The man found out about this when he went to the traffic department to pay fines for three traffic violations for vehicles owned by him and registered under his name.

Upon reaching the traffic department he found out that complaints of serious traffic violations had been registered against his vehicles, and his licence had been suspended for three months since he had accumulated more than 24 black points. This left the clueless father stunned, who then realised that the violations were committed by his sons.

Essam Ibrahim Al Awar, a senior official at the traffic department, said the violations had been committed by the father, and that he knew about it.

He said he did not tell the truth just to protect his children, so that they don't have to pay the fine.

Al Awar said that the first licence suspension is of three months, and attracts a fine of Dh520. The second suspension is of six months and is accompanied by a fine of Dh720. The third suspension is of a year, along with a fine of Dh1,020.

He added that in case of truck drivers, jumping the red light results in immediate licence cancellation, along with deportation from the UAE.

The traffic department has cancelled 24 such licences over the past year, he added.

If a driver of the age 18-20 accumulated 24 black points then it results in the suspension of driving licence for six months, and a repeat offence results in cancellation of the licence.
