More than 2,000 needy families in Yemen were given vouchers for food and other basic needs as part of aid to ease the sufferings they are going through because of the civil war, according to a UAE humanitarian body.
The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) Abu Dhabi branch said it has launched the second phase of the "Kafalat Al Yemen" (Supporting the Yemenis) programme. "The food assistance programme aims to ease the suffering and improve living conditions of the Yemeni people by closing the food gap," said Mohammed Saeed Al Rumaithi, director of the Emirates Red Crescent Abu Dhabi branch.
"The humanitarian programmes implemented by the ERC Abu Dhabi branch target poor and needy people in the government-controlled areas of Yemen and the assistance to families is sometimes doubled based on necessities.
"We have so far distributed 14,684 coupons worth Dh468,400 to 2,128 families in Yemen having a total number of 9,174 people."
The Kafalat Al Yemen programme, which started this year, is intended to benefit 4,630 families. The ERC has allocated Dh2.77 million for the programme, which is being implemented in phases.
The programme is being implemented in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, which issues out the vouchers for the food and other basic grocery items.
The ERC has provided the people of Yemen with Dh13 million in aid including assistance to 475 students during the first half of this year. As many as 176,809 people benefited from the humanitarian assistance.
