The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court of Appeal has terminated the service of a government department employee and ordered him to return Dh41,950 he proved to have misappropriated along with the fines.
The court, presided over by Dr Mohamed Muftah Al Khatiri found the suspect guilty of embezzling public fund and slapped him with a fine of Dh42,000, and ordered him to be deported. The RAK Police were alerted that a public relations section officer from a local government department had embezzled public funds that should have delivered to a printing press.
However, the suspect did not deliver the money. He kept it in his possession and was planning to escape from the country with the amount. The same court ordered the exoneration of two employees working at a printing press, and dropped the charges of embezzlement of Dh67,000 against them.
As per the indictment sheet, the first suspect embezzled Dh67,000 with the help of the second and third suspects. The first accused denied the charges, saying he paid the due fees to the press for printing the documents including workers' residency renewal forms. However, the requested forms were not printed.
He added that the department had some financial litigation with the printing press and the said amount was not delivered, indicating the department was verbally dealing with the printing press without any written contract.
The second and third suspects told the court that the remaining amount which the printing press has to give back to the department is Dh18,050. They added that the printing press tried to return this amount, but there was no specific department where it could be paid.
