The department of public works in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain will soon be replacing 24 old street lights on the arterial Shaikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla road, with eco-streetlights soon.
The move is part of the department's strategic and development plans to improve the quality of public services and utilities in the emirate for the benefit of nationals and residents alike.
Musabih Humaid Musabih, director of the department of public works, said they have already replaced some street lamps, and are set to change the old ones in the coming few days.
"The department is all set to instal 51 new street lights on the internal roads of the emirate to boost and ensure road users' safety whereas the federal government bodies concerned will take care of the highways of the emirate."
Musabih said the department carries out maintenance works on 200 lampposts across UAQ on a monthly basis; a big work that requires long hours and more technicians and electricians.
"All these street lights, old or new, are thoroughly checked every day to fix all malfunctions and worn out pieces, if any, and even replaced with new ones if needed."
Musabih stated that the regular street light maintenance is meant to avoid sudden light outage during night and avoid traffic accidents. "Street lights have been a great help in bringing down robberies and illegal practices."
Staff technicians and electricians change the plastic covers of the lights when required and also the lamps if needed, he elaborated. "All electric parts and wires are also checked and changed when required."
The department of public works here has further installed 88 environment-friendly lampposts on the UAQ Walkway as well as major roads of the emirate, Musabih said.
"More eco-lampposts are to be installed across the emirate in collaboration with the federal bodies concerned," he said, indicating that a distance of 40m to 50m is kept between each lamppost to light up more areas.
