Dubai will launch 1,000 new data gathering projects over the next three years to improve Internet infrastructure and services to residents, according to Ahmad bin Byatt, Chairman of the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company.
Bin Byatt noted that the expansion of information gathering will allow Dubai's government to design, plan, implement and continually manage the delivery of services to the public.
The projects, he noted, are part of Dubai's strategy to embrace the "Internet of Things" - the vast network of electronics, software, sensors and connections that enable them to exchange data.
"As far as Dubai's Smart City platform goes, data will be aggregated from the various sources. The data will be analysed to give us the knowledge that can be used to make better decisions," he said. "If we are able to make better decisions, we will be able to improve the efficiency of the city and if we can do that the productivity of the people will increase. And, if that happens our competitiveness rises. The end result will be more engaged and happy people."
Addresing privacy concerns, bin Byatt noted that all possible measures will be taken to protect information which is gathered.''Our governance is deeply rooted in the security and protection of information and the exclusive use of data for the benefit of Dubai and its residents," he said.
Lastly, bin Byatt invited residents of Dubai to take part in forming the emirate's high-tech future.
"The internet of things belongs to all of us," he said. "It is all about customized solutions and interaction. So I invite everyone to join the conversation and help us customize the future of our city."
