A worker at a clothing shop, accused of filming a female customer with his mobile phone while she was trying a new pair of jeans inside the fitting room, has been sentenced to three months in jail.
The 25-year-old Sri Lankan worker, whose job was to move merchandise in the shop, earlier admitted in the Court of First Instance a charge of breaching a woman's modesty. The court found him guilty of passing his phone which he put on video mode, under the room's door to film the woman. It ordered his deportation after he completed his jail term.
According to public prosecution records, the incident happened on February 15 at a shop inside a mall. A complaint was registered at Al Rashidiyah police station.
"It was after 10 am when I entered the clothing shop in the centre. There was a man (the accused) standing at the cashier's counter. I picked up a pair of jeans and went inside the fitting room.
As I took my trousers off and sat on a chair I felt a movement outside the room's door. I looked down and saw a mobile phone which was filming.
I screamed and then a hand took the phone," the 34-year-old Emirati woman said.
The complainant added she stood still for a while scared and not having a clue what to do.
She left the shop and called the police who arrived about half an hour later.
She told the police that as she walked out of the shop she noticed the accused standing in the other side of the shop. "He was staring at me with a look of fear and embarrassment on his face," she recounted.
The worker may appeal the court ruling within 15 days.
