Fifty-two-year old Abu Ali Hassan, who works as pest control assistant with Dubai Municipality, is working to fulfil his dream of educating his second son Thayab till he becomes a medical doctor.
Abu hails from Malappuram in Kerala. His 22-year-old son Thayab is in the fourth year of his MBBS course at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Abu told Khaleej Times, "I have to ensure that Thayab completes his studies by next year and start getting an allowance to do his higher studies."
Thayab said, "My ambition is to complete MBBS, go for post-graduation, perhaps in neurology and work in my own village so that I can treat my own village folks."
The proud father wishes he could do more for his son but his financial situation prevents him for doing so. Even though many people have offered help, Abu and Thayab are not keen to take charity even though the studies are expensive and will be more so if Thayab goes for higher studies.
Thayab said "In NEET [National Eligibility and Entrance Test], my all India rank was 60 and in the All India OBC [Other Backward Category] merit list, I was the top rank holder." Certain Indian Muslims get special consideration as Other Backward Community for admission in colleges and in getting jobs. Thayab wrote a separate entrance test for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and got the 42nd rank out of 70 eligible students.
Abu said "Many newspapers praised my son's achievement but said that the rank holder's father is an illiterate man. It is painful to read that I could study only up to seventh standard and these reporters did not say that my father could not afford to send all his nine children to school."
