A hotel valet driver has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance for theft from workplace.
The 31-year-old Pakistani valet driver was caught red-handed shortly after he stole Dh20 from a colleague's car. The hotel staff left the bill on purpose there after customers complained of losing valuables and cash.
He is accused of stealing a watch, worth Dh50,000, from a car, and $500 (about Dh1,835) from another car, both belonging to Emirati customers.
During the Dubai public prosecution investigation, the defendant confessed he stole the Dh20 bill from a car around 6pm on November 27 last year. He was arrested shortly later on that day by the police.
"Around 5pm on November 24 last year, a customer complained about losing a watch worth Dh50,000 he had left in the car prior to giving it to the valet driver," a Sudanese security supervisor at the hotel told the prosecutor. "Few hours later, we received another complaint from a customer that he lost $500. The defendant was our primary suspect."
The supervisor recalled in front of the investigator how they then left Dh20 in the car of a colleague and told the defendant to park it. "We found he took the money when we checked that car right after he parked it."
A complaint was filed at Bur Dubai police station. The driver has been charged with theft and attempted theft.
The court will sentence him on February 26.
