A Dubai Duty Free salesman has been arrested for allegedly embezzling Dh22,778 from revenues earned through sales of perfumes, the Court of First Instance was told on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old Moroccan salesman was at work when he embezzled the amount on April 1 and tried few hours later to flee the UAE but he was arrested.
The defendant confessed to the crime in court, claiming that he desperately needed the money for his ailing father's surgery.
He told public prosecution investigators that he was working at the Dubai International Airport's Duty Free since 2012.
"After finishing the 8-hour shift at 2:30 pm, I put the revenues of my sales, worth Dh23,497, in a bag. Instead of depositing the money into the Funds Collection Office, I went to the washroom, where I took out Dh22,778 and delivered the remaining money to the said office".
According to investigations, the accused then went to his place in Sharjah and booked a flight to his home country. He headed to the Abu Dhabi International Airport around 7 pm, where he was caught with the embezzled amount.
A 45-year-old Egyptian security officer at the Duty Free said he was on duty on April 1 at the operation and surveillance room when he received a phone call from the Duty Free Fund Collection Office.
"The employee in charge told me about a deficit of Dh22,778 in the sales amount, which the defendant had handed. We checked the CCTV footage which showed the accused handling a bag at his counter. That bag contained Dh23,497 as he had already put that sum on records.
"He left the Duty Free and wandered around the airport until he entered the washroom. After he handed over the bag to the revenues office, it appeared there was a discrepancy between the amount inside the bag and what he already registered in the system," the security officer said.
The General Directorate of Airport Security was alerted and a criminal complaint was filed against the defendant. He was arrested while trying the leave the country on the same day via Abu Dhabi airport.
CCTV footage showed the defendant carrying a bag containing the stolen money, which he admitted belonged to the Duty Free. The amount Dh22,778 has been seized.
